During August 5th – 8th, Canada’s Shambhala Music Festival 2016 was a sold-out spectacle of music, art, and radical self expression from all 15,000+ attendees. Held at Salmo River Ranch outside the town of Nelson in British Columbia for the 19th straight year, Shambhala has become the premiere destination for all forms of electronic music and entertainment; not just in western Canada, but internationally. As part of The Creators Project, a production set forth to bring light upon the lives of shining stars in the live music scene, we had an opportunity to talk with one of the long-time staples of Dirtybird Records and a headliner of the Pagoda Stage at Shambhala 2016, Justin Martin.
In our dynamic, free-flowing conversation, Justin discusses his creative process and musical genesis, having roots in San Fransisco, relationships with fellow Dirtybird Players like J. Phlip, Ardalan, his brother Christian Martin, and, of course, the boss of Dirtybird, Claude VonStroke (aka Barclay Crenshaw). He also touches what his “ultimate payoff” is when making music like his first big cut, The Southern Draw, in addition to his newest album, Hello Clouds.
Finally, Justin does us all a great service by telling us how to make the perfect Bloody Mary! Take a listen below to the full, unedited conversation recorded at Shambhala Music Festival 2016. Enjoy!
