he little green monsters came out in full force when UK producer and genre-bender Jon Gooch, better known by his stage name FEED ME, threw down at Webster Hall in New York last Saturday. Having just come from a dinner where the food gave me feels of Ratatouille style cuisine, I was looking for a set that scratched all the same itches, and holy f@$k did FEED ME deliver.
What I immediately noticed about Gooch was his confidence. His performance style and set rhythm reinforced why he doesn’t feel the need to “work the crowd.” FEED ME’s luscious beats and progression do that for him, getting the hungry pleasantly starved for the drop before assaulting us with decadent layers of bass, just when we can’t wait another moment. Leading with “Trouble,” a dreamy new track featuring the LA-based synth pop duo Kaneholler, Gooch set the tone for a night full of surprises and bangers. His set was the perfect slow burn, starting with rich, vocal-heavy tracks which eventually marinated into a climactic run of bass and electro-house favorites, including his Kill the Noise collab and party-approved snow anthem, “I Do Coke,” which had the crowd in a frenzy.
I love a show that keeps me guessing, and most importantly, keeps me moving. FEED ME’s audience may have been satiated, but when the beats are that good, you can’t help but go back to the table for seconds. There were plenty of attendees begging for more by the looks of the BASSMENT which was packed with bass chasers scrambling to SUBSET’s open-to-close for one last taste before he sets off on his first national tour.
It’s rare that Webster Hall gets a bite so satisfying, and for that, we thank you, FEED ME.
