Today, the Colorado quartet Head For The Hills releases their fourth album “Blue Ruin“. Head For The Hills is Adam Kinghorn (Guitar), Michael Chappell ( Mandolin), Joe Lessard (Fiddle) and Matt Loewen (Bass). The band has been building momentum since 2004 and has earned much deserved attention from the contemporary bluegrass community. Using traditional bluegrass instruments along with their influences of bluegrass, rock, jam, jazz and hip hop, Head For The Hills fuses a sound that is original and entertaining. At their shows, there is no shortage of fans dancing with true delight. Their previous studio album Head For The Hills was recorded at Bill Nershi’s Sleeping Giant Studio’s and was produced by Leftover Salmon‘s Drew Emmitt. H4TH took a different approach for Blue Ruin and recorded at Aaron Youngberg’s (Finers and Youngberg) studio in the hills of Fort Collins’ Horsetooth Reservoir. Mike Chappell describes the recording experience as “more relaxed and sounding better than ever”. The album is all original and takes their cutting edge, newgrass sound to a higher level. Album art was designed by a screen printer named Tim Doyle who has done work for clients from N.A.S.A. to Barack Obama. There is an assortment of vinyl, stickers and posters available along with the album. This band who started their careers in the dorms of Fort Collins, Colorado has played their way into the lineups of some popular festivals such as Telluride Bluegrass, Wakarusa and South By Southwest. There is still a big summer ahead for H4TH. Their band and the album are worth checking out.
