Secret Solstice Festival, held June 16-19, has just become certified “CarbonNeutral” for this year’s Icelandic event. The four-day music festival in Reykjavik, Iceland is one of the world’s only major international music festivals run 100% on natural resources and powers. In other word, “all CO2 emissions from supplier and organizer travel, as well as event waste, has been balanced out with the purchase of high quality, verified carbon offsets, which Secret Solstice has purchased from the rainforest conservation project Makira REDD+ in Madagascar.”
The international music festival features acts from countries all around the world. The full Secret Solstice 2016 lineup includes Radiohead, Of Monsters and Men, Deftones, Die Antwoord, Jamie Jones, Derrick Carter, Art Department, Skream, St Germain, Action Bronson, Visionquest, Benoit & Sergio, Apollonia, Goldie, Stacey Pullen and many more.
With the start of festival season, many large-scale music festivals have been featured in the news displaying trash-covered lawns at the end of the weekend. Many major events are energy inefficient, and potentially damaging to the environment in which they reside on; Secret Solstice is breaking that stereotype. Furthermore, most festivals use non-renewable energy to power their events, but Secret Solstice Festival will run completely on locally produced geothermal electricity from Iceland’s abundance of hot springs.
Aside from all CO2 emissions and event waste being balanced out with verified carbon offsets, Secret Solstice has implemented a plethora of initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint. Festival curators have purchased a conservation project in Madagascar called Makira REDD+, as well as, created a hybrid transportation project with Toyota. Plus, organizers have implemented a large-scale recycling project with Icelandic Glacial, in which the spring water company has donated hundreds of biodegradable cardboard recycling bins for use at the festival.
