What began in 2012 as Miami’s best “homegrown little festival,” in the words of a local newspaper, III Points Festival, has grown organically into a space-age celebration of the city’s — and the nation’s — hottest musicians, artists, tech gawds, and, for the first time in the festival’s history, literal astronauts. Now, in its fourth and senior year, it’s hard to overstate the ambitions of the festival.
Since its beginnings, like its city of origin, III Points has refused to fall into any one shtick. This year is no different: The nutty constellation of the III Points Festival 2016 lineup will be distributed across five stages at the sprawling Mana Wynwood Production Village from Friday, Oct. 7, through Sunday, Oct. 9, is stacked with rap legends, young and old. From Vince Staples to Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt to Dipset’s Cam’ron to Method Man and Redman. The III Points lineup is also set to feature a wide variety of electronic music artists. From old-school legends like LCD Soundsystem and Thievery Corporation to new-school crushers like M83 and Flying Lotus, the III Points Festival lineup is stacked and well diverse.
As for one of the most integral methods to embrace the III Points spirit — three nights’ worth of dives into the modern Miami underground. As each of the festival’s three nights wears on, the weekenders are guaranteed to thin out, making room for the devoted to wile out to locally grown weirdness like Poorgrrrl, Deaf Poets, Virgo and Twelve Tales.
Still dreaming? Good thing, because the adventure doesn’t end there: III Point Festival 2016 partners, NASA and FUSION, plan to haul an entire virtual-reality setup into the festival’s home for the weekend. Their interactive exhibit will allow attendees to strap on a helmet and explore a “multisensory layout” of Mars circa 2030 that “transcends physical space” with an “immersive, interactive walkthrough of the habitat,” organizers say.
The fun begins each day at 5 p.m. III Points tickets are currently going for $70 to $85 per day, or $125 for a three-day pass. Just make sure to lock yours down soon, as the price is set to increase before the date.
