Little People featuring YPPAH Review @ Bottom Lounge – Chicago – 11/13/14

On Thursday, November 13th, Chicago’s Bottom Lounge hosted Swiss producer Little People and YPPAH.

YPPAH opened for Little People and performed fan favorites, including “D. Song,” “Never Mess With Sunday” and “Blue Schwinn.” YPPAH’s performance got the crowd moving and was as warm and mellow as his totally chilled-out personality.

Laurent Clerc, also known as Little People, took his fans on a trip through space with his seamlessly synced, electronic rhythms. He incorporated lower-key ethereal, celestial melodies, hip-hop roots, with a constant orchestral tempo.

Technicolor, kaleidoscope-like visions served as Little People’s backdrop, giving the audience something beautiful to dance to. He dropped favorites off his We Are But Hunks of Wood album, paired with his trippy music videos for songs such as “Aldgate Patterns.” Well into hit set, he sampled Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold,” which the crowd went wild to. Was it a coincidence that Neil Young had just celebrated his birthday the day before?  You be the judge.

The night’s performances were held in Bottom Lounge’s upstairs stage area, allowing fans a unique, up close and personal music experience. During Little People’s set, a handful of concert-goers took place on a mini stage in the venue and fed off the energy of the crowd with their dance moves. Despite the crowd remaining just inches in front of Little People, Laurent maintained a steady head-bop and meticulously crafted his beats.

Both artists did a tremendous job of morphing the standstill crowd into a gaggle of dancing fools. The mood was elevated, inflated, and energized for the entirety of the evening.  Crowd members even had the chance to mingle with the extremely approachable and sociable Joe Corrales, also known as YPPAH, as he made his way through the crowd and chatted with folks.

The night’s event, presented by Silver Wrapper, brought together a crowd as eclectic and free-spirited as the music itself—the performances by YPPAH and Little People were a real treat and overall a highly electric experience.
