Can you hear that? Far off in the distance? The answer to an SoS for music aficionados everywhere. Describable only in the form of hyperbole, Sound on Sound Festival is the saving grace for all itching and scratching to fill the void that is post-ACL fever, with a lineup that will leave you bruised like a swift kick in the ass.
Inspired in part by the coup of one Graham Williams from the clutches of Fun Fun Fun Fest, Fun House Services has afforded the avid festival personalities the opportunity to indulge in the rehab-hating and scream infused punk vibes of FIDLAR as well as the ethereal and sometimes melancholy melodies of Purity Ring. Phantogram, soon to release a new album ‘Three’ and hot on the heels of continued collaboration with Big Boi, who will also be at the festival (do I smell a special appearance?), will help to Christen the stage on Friday night. Saturday, Beach House having put out not one but two albums in 2015 surely won’t disappoint coupled with the stark contrast of bands like Mac Demarco and The Dillinger Escape Plan. With diversity on Sunday is the revered and undeniably brilliance of Austin’s own Explosions in the Sky, stoner-rapper-enigma Young Thug, and the Australian wit of Courtney Barnett and her dissent of mundane Mondays.
This sonically charged raucous of an experience is to be planned and executed with the festival-goer abreast, providing all necessary provisions on-site and for reasonable prices. Food, merchant goodies, camping (pitch a tent), RV camping (borrow your dads), and a range of hotels and alternatives *cough* airbnb *cough* are all options that are on the table to make your weekend a stellar escape from the city. Oh, did I forget to mention that part? Sound on Sound Fest will be hosted at none other than Sherwood Forest, reminiscent of the Hundred-Acre Wood from all your childhood Winnie-the-Pooh day dreams. A notably gorgeous estate just a hop, skip, and a jump from Austin (just over 40 miles; carpool, people) McDade offers a refreshing environment in the absence of the traffic and hustle & bustle of the city.
With everything from shuttles to camping sites, forest backdrops to food trucks, and hip-hop to punk rock this festival is destined to become a new cornerstone for music lovers seeking an alternative; for the mosh-pit prone, sweat endearing generations SoS is a robust and fresh take on the front of music festival culture at large. Enjoy.
