On March 28th, The Mid in Chicago offered club-goers a perfect mix of classic and new music by artists at the top of their game. Radius, DJ Trew, and Striz got everyone warmed up nicely to get the night moving for the big gun to make his mark. Using his skills that have developed and flourished over his career, legendary DJ/producer George Evelyn of Nightmares on Wax showed everyone how a true DJ does it.
Taking it back to his roots, and leaving the band at home, Evelyn controlled the crowd marvelously with his turntables. The patrons that are used to more of a modern sound received the treat of a classic icon spinning soul, funk, disco and hip-hop.
Evelyn busted out newer reworked tracks from last year’s release Feelin’ Good. Early in the set, he got everyone moving with the hit “Be, I Do” mixed over a fast paced, keep-your-feet moving, jungle beat. This showed how masterful he is on the turntables, seamlessly mixing the high-energy jungle beats into a lower tempo reggae dub that kept everyone’s head bobbing. Also, he threw in “Now is the Time,” a tune with a catchy vocal track that blends all sorts of sounds and genres together.
Nightmares on Wax has constantly developed and evolved. Unlike lots of other producers and DJs, the group has managed to stay true to their sound that has blossomed over the years. Their new string of tours is attracting old fans and new alike all over the world. With such easy access to their discography, George Evelyn along with an array of other musicians that make up Nightmares on Wax has gained a following larger than ever.
