Back in May, inspired by his two-day festival in Telluride, Colorado, Derek Vincent Smith, the mastermind behind Pretty Lights, announced a number of shows across the country in which he termed, “a Series of Episodic Festivals.” Five months and three cities into his 2016 tour, Pretty Lights is now heading to Chicago for a two-night run of music and dancing.
For those who have never heard what Derek has to offer, he describes his music on his SoundCloud biography as: “gritty, crate-digging hip-hop, speaker-shredding digital thump, and instrumentally-based psychedelia.” Sounds pretty decent, huh?
Pretty Lights Live Episodic Festival will take place Friday and Saturday, September 23rd and 24th, at the First Merit Bank Pavilion in Chicago (aka Northerly Island). Previous locations included shows in Gilford, New Hampshire, as well as, two stops in Colorado consisting of Morrison and Telluride. Each stop along the way featured sets by the Pretty Lights Live Band; which core group included Derek and likes of Brian Coogan, Borahm Lee, Alvin Ford Jr. and Chris Karns, plus, a variety of guest performances chosen by the man himself.
The special guests at featured during Chicago’s episodic festival showcase include Tipper, Emancipator, The Grouch and Eligh, Manic Focus, G Jones, SunSquabi, Cofresi and Statik.
The two-day events are meant to expand perspective and experiment with the music scene. Before each episode, the Pretty Lights team releases a short prelude video (like the one below), which embodies a theme for the event. The team also mention to attendees of the Pretty Lights Episodic Festival that in order to continue the story they are trying to tell, attendees should make and post music, art and photos in relation to the theme.
